Be grateful for what life has given you

Gratitude is a feeling of thankful appreciation for favors or benefits that we receive.

We all are grateful when things are going good. Many times in a habitual manner we say, ‘by the grace of God, everything is fine’. However, this must come from deep within ourselves.

Gratitude allows us to celebrate and magnify goodness. But what about when life goes badly? Will people feel grateful in such circumstances?

The answer is that not only will a grateful attitude help—it is essential. It is precisely under crisis conditions when we have the most to gain by a grateful perspective on life. In the face of demoralization, gratitude has the power to energize. In the face of brokenness, gratitude has the power to heal. In the face of despair, gratitude has the power to bring hope. Gratitude can help us cope with hard times.

Remember the bad times.

When times are good, people take prosperity for granted and begin to believe that they are invulnerable. In times of uncertainty, though, people realize how powerless they are to control their own destiny. If you begin to see that everything you have, everything you have counted on, may be taken away, it becomes much harder to take it for granted.

We do not need to wait for great successes to come our way, to be grateful for.

We can be grateful for,

(i) I have enough food for today
(ii) I have a roof above my head and place to sleep
(iii) I have my family- my wife and kids
(iv) I got good teachers, priests and elderly persons to guide me
(v) I have medical facilities
(vi) I have the technology, the internet and even artificial intelligence!

The list can go on and on….

We are not to count these mechanically! We must ‘feel’ them.

Gratitude will help us in good times and bad times also. Let us spend a few minutes daily being grateful to what life has given us.
